Joseph Marie Jacquard invented automated loom using punched cards.

Charles Babbage designed a mechanical computer, the analytical engine.

Herman Hollerith devised a punched card system fo tabulating U.S. census.
1896
Hollerith founded Tabulating Machine Company.
1911
Tabulating Machine Company renamed Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (C-T-R).
1924
C-T-R renamed International Business Machines Corporation (IBM).
1937
Alan M. Turing described a hypothetical computing machine.
1939
John V. Atanastoff constructed first special-purpose electronic digital computer.
1939-1945
Anologue computers used in World War II to calculate paths of bombs and bullets.
1944
Howard Aiken built Mark 1 digital computer.
1946
ENIAC, first general-purpose electronic digital computer, completed.
1947
Transistor invented.
1950
Alan M. Turing proposed a test to determineif machines might be said to "think."
1950-1960
Grace Hopper directed work that led to development of cobol computer programming language.
1958
Control Data Corporation introduced first fully transistorised computer.
1959
IBM introduced its first fully transistorised computers.

First computer chips patented.

U.S. Defense Department developed ARPAnet, the forerunner of the Internet.
1961
First computer-controlled industrial robot used.

First microprocessors produced.

"Pong," first comercially successful arcade video game, appeared.

Universal Product Code (bar code) first appeared on supermarket products.

Stephen G. Wozniak and Steven P. Jobs introduced Apple II personal computer.

First spreadsheet program, VisiCalc, introduced.

Audio compact discs introduced in U.S.

Apple Macintosh desktop computer introduced.
